What Is SILS? (Actual SILS patient)

The traditional laparoscopic procedure uses four to six laparoscopic instruments that are inserted into the abdomen after a bariatric surgeon makes small incisions. The stomach is reduced by about 80% and is then stapled up. The unwanted stomach tissue is removed and the surgeon tests to see if there are any leaks in the stomach. If the stomach is properly sealed, the surgeon closes the four to six abdominal incisions.

Single-incision laparoscopic surgery uses only one incision to insert the instruments and remove the stomach tissue. The patient is left with only one scar near their belly button after the laparoscopic surgery. The scar from the single incision is nearly unnoticeable six months to a year after the vertical sleeve gastrectomy. The surgery itself lasts 60 to 90 minutes, generally.

If you are interested in having an invisible procedure that will leave no scars and having the same weight loss results the single incision gastric sleeve is the right choice for you.

Weight Loss Surgery From a Trained Professional

Dr. Martinez is a double board-certified bariatric surgeon who has performed over 3,500 hours of advanced laparoscopic and bariatric training. She has also performed over 1,500 gastric sleeve, gastric bypasses, single-incision gastric sleeves, and various other bariatric surgeries

Bariatric surgeries can aid in long-term weight loss and give patients the ability to maintain a healthy lifestyle if they are struggling with obesity.

Single incision laparoscopic surgery, also called vertical sleeve gastrectomy, has minimal risks compared to other bariatric procedures. The complication rate for single-incision gastric sleeves is 0.3% and continues to fall as surgeons gain more experience performing the procedure every year.

Dr. Sandy's technique includes having two fully certified bariatric surgeons in every procedure and a very strict sterile environment, also we do not perform more than five surgeries per day and we own and operate our own medical facility allowing us to raise the standards for our patient’s safety.

Undergoing a single incision bariatric surgery from an experienced professional like Dr. Martinez further reduces your risk of complications. At her Tijuana, Mexico, facility, Dr. Martinez and her staff use equipment that meets and exceeds U.S. standards.

I just had the Gastric Sleeve done this past Monday, July 12th. What a great decision!! This whole organization is AMAZING!! From the nurses to Dr. Sandy Martinez. I never felt uncomfortable or scared. From the minute Dr. Sandy looked at me in the operating room and said "Listo?" to my waking up in my hospital room with my wonderful husband waiting for me, I knew I was in good hands.
The following day Ricardo Salazar and Consuelo Hernandez stopped by to personally chat with me and meet me. That was impressive.

Frequently Asked Questions About SILS

How long is the procedure?

This single incision bariatric surgery typically takes 60 to 90 minutes.

What is the difference between a gastric sleeve and a gastric bypass?

The main difference is that gastric sleeve permanently removes a portion of your stomach. Gastric bypass separates the stomach into a smaller pouch and a larger section, both of which remain connected to the GI tract. As a result, gastric bypass is reversible, while gastric sleeve surgery is not. Gastric bypass also involves rerouting of the intestines, while gastric sleeve does not.

How much weight can I lose with gastric sleeve surgery?

Gastric sleeve patients can lose 60% to 100% of their excess weight. This will vary by patient. Those who adopt new, healthy habits and follow the guidelines their doctor sets can see better results. You will work with a nutritionist at our Tijuana practice to develop a diet plan to help you achieve your weight loss goals.

How long will I need to stay in Mexico?

This will vary by patient and procedure. On average, you can expect to stay four days and three nights. Two of those nights will be spent in the hospital to ensure you are recovering properly.

When can I begin workouts after my SILS procedure?

You can typically begin light workouts six weeks following your SILS procedure. It is best to start slow with cardio exercises and light lifting (under 15 pounds). Listen to your body and do not overdo it. After about eight weeks, you can begin more strenuous exercise.
