What Is a Mini Gastric Sleeve?

A traditional sleeve gastrectomy is a bariatric surgery in which a surgeon removes up to 85% of a patient's stomach. This gives the stomach the appearance of a sleeve, reduces the amount of ghrelin (the hunger hormone) present in the stomach, and allows patients to feel full with less food.

A mini gastric sleeve aims to accomplish the same goals as a traditional sleeve gastrectomy, but removes less of the stomach: mini gastric sleeve reduces the stomach to 40%-50% of its original size. It is often a good choice for patients who are active and have a BMI under 35.

I just had the Gastric Sleeve done this past Monday, July 12th. What a great decision!! This whole organization is AMAZING!! From the nurses to Dr. Sandy Martinez. I never felt uncomfortable or scared. From the minute Dr. Sandy looked at me in the operating room and said "Listo?" to my waking up in my hospital room with my wonderful husband waiting for me, I knew I was in good hands.
The following day Ricardo Salazar and Consuelo Hernandez stopped by to personally chat with me and meet me. That was impressive.

Understanding other Bariatric Options

While gastric sleeve and mini gastric sleeve reduce the size of your stomach to help you lose weight, bariatric procedures like gastric bypass and mini gastric bypass are also laparoscopic procedures that are available to you.

Gastric Bypass Surgery

Gastric bypass diagram

Gastric bypass separates the stomach into upper and lower pouches and reroutes the small intestine. This changes how much you can eat and how your body absorbs food, resulting in significant weight loss.

Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery

In a mini gastric bypass, the stomach is divided and the intestines are rerouted, but there is only one new connection. Mini gastric bypass surgery can lead to weight loss results comparable to a traditional gastric bypass.

Gastric sleeve, mini gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, and mini gastric bypass can all help you attain your weight loss goals. Dr. Martinez can help determine which surgery will benefit you most at her bariatric center in Tijuana.
