What Is a Duodenal Switch?

Both the duodenal switch (DS) and SADI-S procedures provide effective weight control and resolution of obesity-related conditions. However, DS typically results in greater long-term weight loss compared to SADI-S, though it requires a longer operative time and can lead to lower vitamin and mineral levels.

Duodenal switch surgery is a weight loss procedure that combines a gastric sleeve with a rearrangement of the small intestine to limit the calories your body can absorb. It also helps you feel full from smaller portions. By restricting the calories you consume and absorb, you can lose weight.

Choose the Team With the Most Experience in Duodenal Switch Worldwide

Duodenal switch is recognized as a more complex procedure than other bariatric surgeries like gastric sleeve or gastric bypass. It also has a slightly higher complication rate than these other surgeries. Due to these facts, it's important to choose a highly qualified team that has vast expertise in this complicated operation.

Our Tijuana team performs more of these procedures than any other provider in the world, so we know how to predict and prevent complications while executing duodenal switch surgery. As an added plus, all procedures at our Tijuana facility are performed by board-certified surgeons who are accompanied by a certified anesthesiologist. Amazed at Low Cost and High Quality

"amazed and very thankful for how much service you get from what little money it cost compared to what it would cost in the United States and the lack of service you would get for that money compared to what Dr. Sandy and her professionals offer." — Frank M.

Candidates for Duodenal Switch

You may be a candidate for duodenal switch bariatric surgery if:

  • Your BMI is above 55
  • You are 40 or older
  • You have comorbidities like metabolic syndrome, hypertension, high levels of cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, joint pains, or any obesity-related illness
  • You have had unsuccessful bariatric surgery, such as sleeve gastrectomy, and have regained some or all of the weight
  • You have attempted traditional weight loss methods with little or no success

We hear time and again that American patients have been told they are not good bariatric surgery candidates for various reasons. We know this can be utterly heartbreaking. We pride ourselves on helping people with complex needs find a viable solution.

The Duodenal Switch Procedure

An initial consultation is needed first. During your initial consultation, Dr. Martinez will review your medical history and your weight loss goals to determine if you're a candidate for a duodenal switch. Let Dr. Martinez know if you have type 2 diabetes, heart disease, or other health concerns. You can then schedule your biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch with our coordinator.

Pre-Operative Tests

On the day you arrive in Tijuana, you will have pre-operative tests run at the hospital. After your tests, you will spend the night in a hotel.

Anesthesia

The following day, Dr. Martinez will perform your surgical procedure, which generally lasts about 120-150 minutes. Before your surgery, you will be placed under general anesthesia, which means you will be asleep for the entire procedure.

Incisions

A small incision is made in your abdomen, and cameras are used to view the area. Advanced technology and laparoscopic procedures mean easier and faster recovery times.

Gastric Sleeve

Gastric sleeve surgery is performed, removing about 80% of your stomach. This reduces the amount of food your stomach can hold.

Small Intestine Bypass

Dr. Martinez then attaches the end section of your small intestine to the duodenum and closes off the middle section of your small intestine.

Biliopancreatic Diversion

A biliopancreatic diversion is then performed. The middle portion of the small intestine is connected to the end section of the small intestine. This allows digestive juices such as bile and pancreatic fluids to flow into this newly created section of your intestines.

Closing the Incisions

Dr. Martinez will then remove her surgical instruments and close the incisions.

Recovery

You will recover for two days and nights in the hospital so our staff can monitor you closely to prevent any complications. On the evening of your fourth day in Tijuana, you can travel home and continue your recovery there. Over the course of the next several weeks, you will begin to see weight loss results.

FAQ About Duodenal Switch in Tijuana, MX

How is a duodenal switch different from other bariatric surgeries?

Unlike gastric sleeve or gastric bypass alone, the duodenal switch combines both procedures to combine the benefits of both. First, a sleeve gastrectomy reduces the size of your stomach and the amount of food you can consume. Then, the small intestine is rerouted to limit calorie absorption. This dual approach makes it one of the most effective long-term weight loss options available.

How much weight can I expect to lose?

Most patients lose 70–90% of their excess weight within the first two years after surgery. The duodenal switch typically produces greater weight loss and is the most effective procedure for patients with higher BMIs or obesity-related conditions.

What risks should I be aware of?

Because the duodenal switch is more complex, it requires a highly experienced surgical team. Potential risks include nutritional deficiencies, longer recovery, or surgical complications. With Dr. Martinez and her certified team, strict safety protocols and close follow-up care help minimize these risks.
